Candidates should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding in relation to:

- scientific vocabulary, terminology, conventions (including symbols, quantities and units contained in ‘Signs, Symbols and Systematics 16–19’, Association for Science Education, 2000)
- scientific instruments and apparatus, including techniques of operation and aspects of safety
- scientific quantities and their determination scientific and technological applications with their social, economic and environmental implications.
The subject content defines the factual knowledge that candidates may be required to recall and explain.
Questions testing those objectives will often begin with one of the following words: define, state, describe, explain or outline.
B Handling Information and Solving Problems
Candidates should be able (in words or by using symbolic, graphical and numerical forms of presentation) to:
- locate, select, organise and present information from a variety of sources
- translate information from one form to another
- manipulate numerical and other data
- use information to identify patterns, report trends and draw inferences
- present reasoned explanations for phenomena, patterns and relationships
- make predictions and propose hypotheses
- solve problems.
These assessment objectives cannot be precisely specified in the subject content because questions testing these objectives may be based on information which is unfamiliar to the candidates. In answering such questions, candidates are required to use principles and concepts that are within the syllabus and apply them in a logical, reasoned or deductive manner to a novel situation. Questions testing these objectives will often begin with one of the following words: predict, deduce, suggest, calculate or determine.
C Experimental Skills and Investigations
Candidates should be able to:
- follow a sequence of instructions
- use techniques, apparatus and materials
- make and record observations, measurements and estimates interpret and evaluate observations and experimental results
- plan investigations, select techniques, apparatus and materials
- evaluate methods and suggest possible improvements.
Weighting of Assessment Objectives
Theory Papers (Papers 1 and 2)
A Knowledge with Understanding, approximately 45% of the marks with approximately 15% allocated to recall.
B Handling Information and Solving Problems, approximately 55% of the marks.
Practical Assessment (Paper 3)
Paper 3 will assess appropriate aspects of assessment objectives C1 to C6 in the following skill areas:
- Planning (P)
- Manipulation, measurement and observation (MMO)
- Presentation of data and observations (PDO)
- Analysis, conclusions and evaluation (ACE)
The assessment of Planning (P) will have a weighting of 15%. The assessment of skill areas MMO, PDO and
ACE will have a weighting of 85%”
For A-Level Chemistry, the MOE states:
“AIMS
The aims of a course based on this syllabus should be to:
- provide students with an experience that develops interest in Chemistry and builds the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for further studies in related fields
- enable students to become scientifically literate citizens who are well-prepared for the challenges of the 21st century
- develop in students the understanding, skills, ethics and attitudes relevant to the Practices of Science, including the following:
3.1 understanding the nature of scientific knowledge
3.2 demonstrating science inquiry skills
3.3 relating science and society
- develop the way of thinking to explain phenomena, approach and solve problems in chemical systems which involves students in:
4.1 understanding the structure, properties and transformation of matter at the atomic/molecular level and how they are related to each other
4.2 connecting between the submicroscopic, macroscopic and symbolic levels of representations in explaining and making predictions about chemical systems, structures and properties.

Reduce Tutoring Requirements
Tuition rates depend on tutor qualifications as well as tutor availability. The more requirements you have, the harder it is to find a tutor who will respond to your assignment.
Typical requirements would include Gender, Combination of Subjects, Budget, Schedule, etc.
You should shortlist the requirements that are most important to you.
For example, if you want only female tutors, then this reduces the tutor options by 50%.

Major National Exams
Tutors who specialize or have significant experience in tutoring students taking their PSLE, GCE O Levels and GCE A Levels typically quote higher hourly rates.
This is due to the intensive effort in exam preparation, content revision, and (if the student was not taught properly in previous years) getting the student to un-learn the study skills that have been causing weak grades.
Every year after the June holidays, good tutors usually do not want to teach graduating-year students because they will need to rush and intensely cram a lot of content, in order to adequately prepare the student.
